"The best yachting photographers develop real synergy with the vessels they shoot. It's like a sixth sense, an understanding of what really makes the craft move"

Leading yachting and specialist interiors photographer Jainie Cowham is a master of her art.

After four years studying photography (culminating in a B.A. Hons) and a lifetime of sailing and diving (she also has Yacht Master offshore, PADI and BSAC qualifications) she threw herself into the deep end and set up Jainie Cowham Photography.

Now she works with leading agencies including Ocean Independence, Yachting Partners International, Edmiston, Camper and Nicholson, Nigel Burgess, MCM, Cavendish White, Fraser Yachts, and top boat builders like Feadship, Vitters, Holland Jachtbouw, Dubois, Oyster, Fairline, Sunseeker, and Cranchi.

Jainie Cowham Photography has won commissions from owners of many high profile yachts including Shamrock V, Mariquita, Kermit, African Queen (now Red Dragon), Blue Moon, Lady Christine and Sarah, Wild Thyme etc.

Her work is frequently published in yachting and photography titles across the world.

The best of blue sky and deep sea thinking.

Excerpts from an interview with Jainie:

"Quality yachting photography demands specialist skills. My challenge is to fuse individual artistic flair with commercial know-how.

It's about understanding what makes a vessel move, anticipating sailing conditions and maneuvers and understanding the fine art of sail trimming.

The capture of a yacht's finest angle is part aesthetics and part a comprehension of yacht design. Experience in dealing with lighting challenges and with constantly changing scenes all around the camera is key to a professional shoot."

"About 40% of my time will be spent in preparation; hiring camera boats, helicopters, hunting down the best locations, weather forecasting and people handling - and with an average shoot lasting no more than 2 or 3 days a positive rapport with the crew is vital."

She added: "The secret is to follow the brief but build in creative flair and keep within budget. If you can do all that, the rest is plain sailing."
